After a few lessons ULU students will need to join the ULU kung fu society which currently costs £10.
You will then receive a free month of training.
Non-Students £6 per lesson / £25 per month.
For your first few classes you can train in
regular sports wear i.e. tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt. It is advisable to
also bring some water and/or a sports drink with you. No footwear is
necessary. If you decide to continue training, uniforms can then be
purchased through the club.
When starting training new students are
always partnered with senior students to help and guide you, as is
traditional in Chinese Martial Arts.
We currently have students from
the following
University of London Colleges and Institutions training with
us - UCL, LSE, RVC, SOAS, Birkbeck, LSHTM, King's College, Institute of
Education and the School of Pharmacy.
Roughly 40% of our students are female.
Nam Pai Chuan
has been taught at
ULU for over 15
years and our instructor has over 20 years of martial arts experience. Our teaching system equips students with a solid grounding in
the practice of martial arts and leads to a number of specialisations.
Being a practical system, we encompass many elements including
kicking, punching, locking, nerve point and take-down techniques. Our
style includes the various animal forms prevalent in Chinese martial
arts, such as Leopard, Crane, Snake, Eagle, Tiger and Monkey forms to
name but a few. We also celebrate a rich weapons heritage with 18
traditional weapons taught in the system including Staff, Broadsword,
Spear, Halberd, Butterfly Knives and Three Section Staff.
Insurance
When you have attended a few classes you will need to
purchase insurance through the
British Council for Chinese Martial Arts
(BCCMA),
the controlling body for Chinese Martial Arts in the United Kingdom. Through
the BCCMA we provide comprehensive insurance cover for all our instructors
and students. This will enable you to participate in our full range of
training i.e. sparring/weapons training and undertake grading examinations.
Progress
Grading examinations are held
every three months, in March, June, September and December and at certain times we devote special attention towards
preparing students for the grading examinations. Those who progress to black
belt ranks may then be eligible for Assistant Instructors' Qualification
courses.
